How Giyu is built

Giyu (己酉) is the 46th of the sixty pillars. Its upper character is the yin form of earth, and its lower character carries metal as the branch of the Rooster.

The pillar holds earth above and metal below — two different elements in one column. How those two mesh is where reading this day pillar begins.

This earth is fine and workable, the kind that grows things. The branch below is refined metal — closer to a finished product than to raw material. Earth produces metal, so the direction from inside to outside sets itself.
