What makes the master numbers (11, 22, 33) special?

Two-digit totals are usually reduced to one digit, but 11, 22, and 33 are left as they are. The repeated digit is read as a stronger emphasis on intuition, realization, or healing. It is not better or worse — just a pattern with a different emphasis.

If my number is a master number, is it always kept unreduced?

When 11, 22, or 33 appears, the default is to leave it unreduced. That said, ARO sees the reduced digit (2, 4, 6) still running underneath, so reading both layers gives a fuller picture of the tendency.
